With the New Mexico Archery elk hunt under my belt coming back empty handed puts a new perspective on everything that goes into archery elk hunting. While preparation helps it can not completely prepare you for all the ups and downs the mountain will toss your way. If you can control all the controllable things you have a fighting chance or a better one. Sometimes just grinding it out and putting in the time is the best thing a hunter can do.
If you haven’t checked out the series on my Youtube channel you need to. It was a rollercoaster ride of a hunt but it was a good one. Watch the the videos here 👇🏼
Even though I didn’t come back with a elk, I learned that my gear didn’t let me down, especially my Pnuma apparel. The weather conditions were variable in New Mexico and that made each day important to layer accordingly. Days started at about 45-50 degrees, and ended up at mid to high 70s by the heat of the day. As A base layer I started with Pnuma Base layers bottoms and then Pnuma Base Layer 1/4 zip. Along with a good socks, the next layer I liked to wear a the new Prevail Pant in either the new Caza OV Pattern or Clay. These pants offer great protection while a huge range of motion for long days of hiking miles. On top for my next layer, and probably my first or second favorite garment is the Gunnison Merino Wool Hoodie.
To round out the layering for the cold of the morning and the cold of the evening I would add an Alpha Vertex Vest on top. Its the perfect amount of warmth without the added bulk or weight. These are the perfect items to have on that early season Archery bugle hunt in the mountains of New Mexico. If you want to lear about any of these garments be sure to check them out online at Pnuma Outdoors. Then if you want to try something out use my promo code “OJ20” for 20% off.
