It doesn’t matter if there is a fifty pound pack on your back, or if you’re walking through thick cover waiting on that last pheasant to flush, boots may just be the most crucial piece of equipment a hunter can own. The last thing any outdoorsman or woman wants is a rolled ankle, blisters, or wet socks. Picking a pair of good boots is an extremely important decision. Here at Beretta we put together a guide on what to look for when you’re picking out a pair of boots. This is the Beretta BOOTS guide.
Beretta Sells Boots
There are a ton of brands out there but not many outdoors people know that the world’s best gun manufacturer also makes Boots!
Optimal Weight
As a general rule of thumb you want your boots to be as light as possible. The lighter the boot the less overall mass you have on your person while getting from point A to Point B. However there are some exceptions to this rule. The main exception is the two W’s; Warmth & Wetness. Are you hunting in the tundra for caribou where it’s extremely cold and very wet? You may need a boot with more insulation and better waterproofing. That may add weight but will definitely keep you in the backcountry longer. Land 30 GTX boots are the perfect weight with lots of insulation and Gore-Tex waterproofing.
Operation
What do you need from your boot? Do you need it to stay dry in the damp snowy forest chasing elk or do you need to let your feet breathe while following your pointer through the western plains? There is always some give and take but when you know what you need from your boots you can list out the features you want. Here are some operation rules.
- If it is more wet then dry always choose waterproof boots
- If a day’s low temperature is warmer than fifty degrees you don’t ever need insulation.
- If a day’s high temperature is colder than fifty degrees you always need some level of insulation.
Terrain
Boots are constructed in different fabrics and heights. The terrain determines the type of boot you’ll need. If the terrain is more rocky and edgy you need a boot that is taller and provides more ankle support. The Trail Mid GTX has aggressive tread and high ankle support for mountain hunting.
Stiffness
The fabrics that hold together your boot are the same ones that protect your feet. If the fabric is stiffer then your foot is more protected. Therefore the boot that is of stiffer construction will help climbing cliffs, sidehilling, and make bouldering easier. Stiff is the opposite of Flex. The rougher the terrain the stiffer the boot needs to be. Shelter MID GTX boots have an extremely sturdy upper and 3 layer construction footbed to add comfort on difficult terrain.
