Freemont Canyon Fly Fishing Trip: Day 2

Seeing the stars so bright at night is a definite perk of camping in Wyoming. The state has got to have the least amount of light pollution. My dad’s oversized cot didn’t quite fit that well in my four person tent, but we made it work. That night it got down to the upper 30s, pretty cold for the beginning of summer. Nevertheless we woke up, mixed a batch of pancakes and tossed them on my portable stove. The handful of leftover McDonalds syrup we had made a nice little breakfast.

We gathered our gear and left camp for the canyon. We pulled off the main road into a small parking lot right along the cliff’s edge, rigged lines up and headed down into the canyon. We decided today that we would try and fish as much in the canyon as we could. We knew that if water was harder to get to we would have a better chance of catching fish.

I started fishing downstream away from my dad and found a nice pool of water with some big trout. I started nymphing down a foam line coming out of faster water. Nymphing or Czech Nymphing uses a special fly and method of nymph fishing that was developed in the regions of Middle and Eastern Europe. The principle of fishing the Czech nymph is short-distance fishing, practically under the tip of the rod. The fly line is hanging under the tip of the rod and its end often does not even touch the water. Two or three nymph flies of various weights are used.

I was able to land two beautiful trout out of this pool. You can see the fish in my YouTube video. It was a great way to start off the day. After releasing the second fish I heard my dad say, “Fish on”. I hurried, running and jumping over boulders to get to him quickly and then grabbed his net to help him land the fish. It was another sixteen inch rainbow trout. What an awesome catch!

Dad’s first catch from Day 2 – A great 16 inch rainbow trout.

We fished the canyon in many different pools, we both hooked into about five fish, and landed about three. Two big fish that I hooked into took me up and down the river around boulders and ended up getting off. The next morning we decided to pack up and head back.

See my video to experience the beautiful scenery of Fremont Canyon and Pathfinder Reservoir. It was an awesome trip and I am excited to do it again next year. If you want to learn more about fly fishing in Wyoming please go to the Wyoming Game and Fish website.
