Freemont Canyon Fly Fishing Trip: Day 1

For many years my dad and I would always go on at least one fishing trip together each year. This year we decided to go to one of out favorite places, Freemont Canyon. When I moved out to western Nebraska right out of college a friend of mine told me about the giant fish in the Freemont canyon. It was about a three and a half hour drive, and I decided to go. That first trip had me hooked!

Flip the page to now 2021 my best friend and hunting buddy Tyler Sanders invited my father and I to a mens fishing retreat at Freemont Canyon. My father and me just couldn’t say No! So on June 11th my father and I loaded my SUV and headed west. After a four hour drive we arrived in the town of Alcova. We stopped by the Reef Fly Shop to get our fishing licenses and some local intel then drove the back roads up to Pathfinder Reservoir. We set up our tent in record time. Lets just say we had a little motivation. We wanted to fish!

We got the waders on and rigged up our fly rods and started fishing the flats working our way up to the canyon. Dad landed one brown trout on a san juan worm and I hooked into a few trout but was unable to land them. We fished the flats for about 2-3 hours. Then we decided to head into the canyon. To enter the canyon its a bit more climbing and bouldering than just a little walk. Many people will enter the canyon and fish their way out. Like anything fish are less spooky where less people fish.

We fished the entrance to the canyon till last light and dad ended up landing a nice rainbow trout and I ended up fighting and landing a giant 22 inch plus rainbow. It was a blast and we couldn’t wait back to get at it again in the morning.

The night ended fireside with a couple men sharing stories of past and how God has changed their lives. It was an awesome time to fellowship with men and speak truth from the bible.
